Antenatal Shared Care (ANSC) is an option offered to all pregnant women who are assessed as suitable for the program. Care is provided collaboratively by the general practitioner (GP) and the hospital-based service.

The ANSC program aims to:

  • Provide pregnant women with flexibility, choice, and continuity of care
  • Cater for the preferences and needs of women from culturally and diverse backgrounds
  • Enhance the skills of GPs caring for women during pregnancy
  • Promote communication between GPs and the participating hospitals

To provide ANSC to pregnant women who are giving birth in South Western Sydney Local Health District hospitals, GPs must be recognised as an ANSC provider. To become a recognised provider, a GP completes the application and attends a mandatory ANSC orientation session.

To maintain ANSC recognition GPs must complete 3 hours of pregnancy-related continuous professional development (CPD) each year. Evidence of CPD attendance is to be provided to SWSPHN.

CPD hours can be recorded across different types of activities. To ensure the relevance of any external CPD, please consult the list of eligible ANSC topics.

A new registration renewal process starts in August 2024 and aims to create a more efficient, structured process for tracking and auditing CPD hours.

GPs wanting to maintain their registration as an ANSC provider must complete three hours of eligible CPD and a short, online form by 31 October each year, to retain their registration.

Eligible CPD includes CPD on various antenatal topics delivered both face-to-face and online each month by SWSPHN’s CPD team. It can also include external CPD which has been RACGP-approved (see information on right side of this page).

Key points for the new process include:

    • ANSC registration renewal will take place annually, with three hours of ANSC CPD to be completed between 1 November and 31 October each year.
    • GPs will be emailed a unique link to an online registration renewal form each August/September, seeking confirmation by 31 October they want to remain an ANSC provider for the following year, and declaring they have completed three hours of eligible CPD in the set timeframe, and accepting the terms of being a ANSC provider.
The form will take approximately three minutes to complete.
    • The new registration renewal process begins this year (2024), and ANSC providers will be emailed their unique link early next month (August).

How to access relevant CPD points

The three ANSC CPD hours can be recorded across different types of activities. For example, CPD hours can be recorded as a combination of educational activities and involvement on an ANSC relevant committee.

Look for SWSPHN-hosted CPD event to right hand side of this page. SWSPHN keep a record of any CPD completed through the events it hosts.

If you have acquired eligible CPD external to SWSPHN since October 2023, you are encouraged to let SWSPHN know. his could be a completion certificate or RACGP transcript.

    Please email ansc@swsphn.com.au.

Liverpool Hospital is starting a new midwifery continuity of care model for pregnant women. The new Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) will serve women within Liverpool's catchment area.

The MGP model provides primary health care throughout:

    • pregnancy,

    • labour,

    • birth, and

    • up to 2 weeks postpartum.

MGP provides care for women anticipating a low-risk pregnancy. Each woman and her medical, obstetric and psychosocial risk factors are assessed. The Australian College of Midwives National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral is the tool used to categorise a pregnant woman's risk factors. Women classified as a category A or B, per the Guidelines for Consultation and Referral, are eligible for MGP. They may remain in the model of care if they develop risks during pregnancy.

Women can express their interest in MGP via the Booking in My Pregnancy (BiMP) form. GPs can declare a woman's interest in being on the MGP in the referral letter to Liverpool Hospital Antenatal Clinic.

There are limited places available on MGP. Women should be encouraged to express interest as early as practical.

A new Australian Government funded national cervical screening campaign is commencing in September and is likely to increase patient demand for the HPV self-collection option.

In advance of this patient-facing campaign, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has funded the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer to undertake a nationwide healthcare provider awareness campaign, ‘HPV Self-Collection: Are YOU ready to support the choice?’. The campaign aims to encourage healthcare providers to ensure their practices are ready to offer the HPV self-collection option to all who are eligible in advance of the patient-facing campaign.

HPV self-collection allows screening participants to take their own vaginal sample for HPV testing. Self-collection is one of the best tools we have available to increase cervical screening participation, address disparities in screening, and keep us on track to eliminate cervical cancer in Australia by 2035.

Find resources CPD online learning modules, videos, and information on how to support under-screened groups at www.acpcc.org.au/self-collection-campaign.
