Syphilis in Pregnancy and Newborns Guidelines Update

1st September 2026 The NSW Health Guideline for Syphilis in Pregnancy and Newborns Guidelines were updated.

All pregnant women are to be offered syphilis screening at:

• the first antenatal visit

• 26 to 28 weeks

• 36 weeks' gestation or birth (whichever occurs first).

Women with limited or no antenatal care, or who may miss appointments, should be offered the full suite of antenatal tests, including opportunistic syphilis screening, at any presentation regardless of gestation. With consent, clinicians should actively refer them to an antenatal care provider.
