Thanks to my great GP
I’d spent a number of years looking for the right GP, to become my regular GP, understanding that as I got older it would become more and more important to have a health professional I felt comfortable with and could trust.
I wanted someone who I could develop a relationship with, someone who knew my medical background and someone who was accessible.
Fortunately for me, about a year before the biggest health challenge of my life, I not only found a great GP, but a GP who works with a team of patient, caring and smart health professionals who’ve made me feel supported and safe during the past nine months.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August last year.
I visited my GP after finding lumps in both breasts, was immediately sent for an ultrasound, followed up by a mammogram and biopsies within days, and when it became clear everything was not ok, he was a calming influence, answering my questions and expediting an appointment with a surgeon.
My doctor has called me with test results, followed up on concerns about treatment, patiently and clearly answered every question I had, checked in to make sure I’m ok, removed stitches and been kind, concerned and supportive of both me and my husband.
There’s obviously a lot of fear and anxiety related to a breast cancer diagnosis, and having a regular GP and being in such good hands has made a very difficult time just that bit easier.
Treatment is ongoing but I’m hopeful for a healthy future.
