Keeping People Healthy - draft prevention plan feedback sought
South Western Sydney Local Health District are collaborating with South Western Sydney PHN to write a prevention plan for the District.
South Western Sydney Local Health District has a proud history of prevention and partnerships to address the determinants of health, and we are committed to our responsibility to promote, protect and maintain the health of our community. We know that a focus on prevention has benefits for individuals, our communities, our health service and our region.
Health and wellbeing are not just about personal choice – we know that many of the root causes of health lie outside the control of individuals and the health sector. These wider determinants of health are the fundamental drivers of health equity. They have both protective and adverse impacts and include social, environmental, structural, economic, cultural, biomedical, commercial and technological factors. Examples include family situation, impact of extreme weather events, income, cultural identity, genetics, marketing and advertising and access to digital platforms. These factors form the basis for acting across district services, with partner agencies and the community.
Encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle is not enough to create long lasting change. To address complex health problems, we must consider the bigger picture, including focusing on those things that help or get in the way of healthy behaviours, including changes to the social, commercial and physical environments within which we live.
We’re interested in your views about what we can do to prevent disease, and protect and promote health and wellbeing in our community.

Keeping People Healthy: SWSLHD Prevention Plan 2023-2027 now available for your feedback
During December we sought input from the community to inform the development of the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) “Keeping People Healthy: SWSLHD Prevention Plan 2023-2027.” This plan will reflect the vision and mission of the new SWSLHD Strategic Framework and serve as an extension of the strategic direction “A Healthy Community”. Keeping People Healthy identifies priorities for preventing disease and protecting and promoting health and wellbeing in our community. Many actions within the plan will require collaboration within the health system and with external partners including government agencies, community organisations and consumers.
The draft plan is now available for review, and I invite your feedback via an online survey. The survey is available here and is open from today until 3 February 2023. The survey link is also included on the front page of the attached draft plan.
